How LUSO changed the lives of Lulu’s family

Lulu lived a normal life in Syria with her husband and two children, Mark and Matsen. But everything changed when political conflict made it unsafe. She had to make a hard choice—to leave her home and move to Canada for safety and a better future.
In 2010, she became a refugee, hoping for a fresh start. But moving to a new country was not easy. When she arrived in London, Ont., language was a barrier, and she didn’t know anyone. She felt lonely and lost.
One day, a neighbor told her about LUSO Community Services. She joined their Shared Beginnings Program, which helps families like hers adjust to life in Canada. The program supports parents and children with learning and building connections.
At first, it was difficult. Lulu and her children struggled with English. But the staff and other families at LUSO were welcoming and kind.
Over time, her children started to grow. They made friends, learned new things, and became more confident.
The program helped Mark and Matsen in many ways. They were shy at first but slowly learned to speak better and express themselves. Simple activities like storytelling and play helped them make friends and feel more comfortable in school.
For Lulu, LUSO gave her something she missed from home—a sense of community. She met other parents who shared similar experiences. She became more social and confident, finally feeling like she belonged.
Lulu believes the program helped her children adjust to school and life in Canada. The skills they learned gave them confidence, and the friendships they made their new life easier. As a mother, Lulu now feels stronger and better prepared to support her children.
For Lulu and her family, LUSO was more than just an organisation. It was a place of learning, friendship, and belonging. It gave them hope for a better future in Canada
LUSO has been a great community service centre for our family. We have been attending their workshops for a very long time and still enjoy and learn som much more. My kids love it there and he has made many new friends. They have been a great help for new immigrants like us.
